GUMBARTS, INC. is an old, established retail store in the Macomb downtown. Originally started in 1895 as a saddle and bridle shop, Mr. Thomas Gumbart began the business on the South Side of the Square. He later sold that business to his nephew George Gumbart who in turn sold the business to his daughter and son-in-law Sally and Bob Reedy. In the mid-sixties, Hugh Anderson worked at Gumbarts as a college student while at Western Illinois University. His brother Doug replaced Hugh upon his graduation in 1967. Doug continued his employment and was named Manager in 1976 when the Reedy's retired to Texas. Shortly after, Hugh returned to Macomb. In 1977, the brothers purchased the present building on the East Side of the Square, bought the business from the Reedys and became partners in GUMBARTS. The Andersons gradually did away with first the leather goods, and then the sporting goods so that their business today is totally soft goods. They, of course, cater to WIU students with an emphasis on Greek merchandise. Full time employees operate both the trophy and plaque department in the Awards Cellar, and the embroidery and sewing area. College students as part-time workers have continued the tradition the Andersons started in the sixties. Service and satisfied customers have been and will continue to be GUMBARTS reason for being in business.
